Chevy Kodiak Overview

Chevy Kodiak Accessories

The heart of the Kodiak is the same Duramax 6600 and Allison six-speed transmission (with PTO) in Silverado and Sierra HD trucks, and although some versions of the Duramax can be tuned to 350 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, the medium-duty versions are not. Kodiak numbers are 300 horses and 605 pound-feet. During runs around town, driver will be most impressed with how smoothly the Allison shifted and ran through the gears. You'd think a powertrain designed to carry and haul in excess of 20,000 pounds would shift abruptly when empty, but that wasn't the case. The new software is better able to detect what types of loads exist and makes more seamless adjustments to the shift pattern. The gearbox holds gears longer than many of the transmissions tuned for maximum fuel economy.

As ludicrous as the Kodiak pickup would be as a daily driver, it's really quite civilized in that oddly shaped cab, and with the platform-like diamond plate running boards, not all the hard to get in. The interior is cushy, especially the air-suspended driver's seat in the air-suspended cab on our test truck. A DVD entertainment system is available (but not installed) to anesthetize back seat occupants, and there's a lot of room for them, and XM navigation is optional (and installed). Another buyer's choice item is side rear-view cameras. When the turn signal is used, a camera on that side shows a rearward view down that side of the truck on the nav system screen. With Chevy Kodiak Accessories like the big trailer mirrors this seems an expensive redundancy. However it does impress the kids.
